About Paulo Lopes
Paulo is a skilled musician, performer, and
teacher with over 25 years of experience. Paulo’s extensive musical
background includes teaching, playing the violin, playing classical and
jazz guitar, composing and conducting, recording, audio studio
engineering and CD production.
Paulo has degrees in music composition
and orchestra direction. He has played the violin in a number of
well-known symphony orchestras in his native Brazil, including the
Campinas Symphony Orchestra in Sao Paulo, the State University String
Orchestra, the Americana String Orchestra, and the Bahia Federal
University Symphony Orchestra. He has been the recipient of numerous
awards in symphonic composition and arrangement in contests at the
University of Campinas.
Also
in
Brazil, Paulo was thrilled to direct several music laboratories
sponsored by the state of Bahia for low-income
residents.

As part of
this innovative initiative, for which Paulo received honors from the
State’s governor, Paulo inspired poor residents of Salvador to make
musical instruments from recycled materials; Paulo also formed a
classical guitar orchestra made up of 20 beginners with no previous
guitar experience, as well as directing and conducting a choir.

Paulo
has lived in the US since 2000 and has been an active musician and
teacher in the Triangle area since 2005. As a teacher, Paulo has worked
with a variety of local music education providers such as Carrboro
Music Studio, the Chapel Hill Violin Shop, Durham Community College,
Pearson Music Studio and Music Explorium.
Paulo
frequently performs as a soloist, sharing his love of Brazilian jazz
guitar and vocals at jazz festivals, restaurants and nightclubs. Paulo
also performs, sings, arranges and composes with other Brazilian bands,
including the Brazilian Soul Band, the Brazilian Jazz Trio, Holly Samba
and Brazilian Strings.

In addition to his work as a teacher, performer, and composer, Paulo
has extensive hands-on experience with instrument repair.
At the Electric Violin Shop in Durham, Paulo continues to learn and
share the age-old art of lutherie, repairing and restoring old violins
and setting up and repairing modern electric violins.
